The graphic on the left is in JPEG (*.jpg) format, greyscale mode, and is about 5 KB in size. The one on the right is an inlined GIF89a (*.gif) format, line art mode, with a "transparent" background and is about 1 to 2 KB in size. To download the image using Netscape's browser, click on it with your right mouse button and follow the instructions on the pop-up menu.

Interesting note: The JPEG and matching GIF images are identical in physical size. Since the JPEG image is a "compressed" file format, it usually takes only about half the storage space of a GIF image - - provided they are in the same color mode (rgb color, grayscale, etc.). However, the JPEG format doesn't support line art (black and white only) mode, and the GIF format does, hence the smaller file size.
